Fun Science- Let's make butter

At home this week, we studied all about cows; encompassing anatomy, literature, poetry, scientific facts and orthography...so to drive the message home it was only fitting that we make butter!

Here's what you need

1. Heavy whipping cream and a
2. Glass jar

Here's what you do
1. Pour cream into a jar its best if the cream is at room temperature otherwise it will take extra extra long to transform into butter (we left ours out for in the sealed carton for 12 hrs.)
2. Close jar lid, shake the jar for about 3 minutes, about one good strong shake per second. The cream will start out with the consistency of milk then turn into whipped cream like consistency and finally it will separate into butter & skim milk.
3. Use a colander to separate the butter from the skim milk. You can reserve the skim milk for other use.
4. Now that you've separated the butter from the skim milk pour the butter back into the jar. Add about a cup of water, close lid and give it a nice shake, this is to rinse all the milk off the butter.
5. Pour out the water and you are left with your butter.
6. Your butter is ready to eat! You can add one of the following: salt, sugar, honey, garlic or simply nothing and eat it up with some toast! Enjoy!
